When you thing of improving physical skills for volleyball, you’d immediately think of jumping higher and hitting harder. While those are two huge skills needed to be a good volleyball player, there are others too. Lateral agility is one of the most needed skills. The hitter is not going to spike the ball right at you. So, you’ll need to move laterally to reach some kill shots. Lateral agility can be improved a couple different ways. Here are some volleyball drills for agility to help improve your game.

 

 

Low Shuffle

 

Place two cones 5 yards apart for this volleyball drills for agility. Stand laterally at one cone, feet wide and hips dropped like you’re in your defensive stance. Stay low and take short shuffle steps, not letting your feet get close to each other. Shuffle as fast as you can to the far cone and touch with your hand. Shuffle back in the opposite direction to complete the drill. It is very important to stay as low as you can on this drill. Getting to high will not improve this skill for volleyball.

Lateral Crossover Drill

 

Place two cones 5 yards apart for this volleyball drills for agility. Stand laterally at one cone, feet wide and hips dropped like you’re in your defensive stance. While staying low, take a cross over step with your outside foot and sprint to the far cone touching it with your hand then sprint back to the starting cone. It’s very important to stay facing the same direction in this volleyball drills for agility. On the volleyball court you never turn your back to the net so pretend you’re facing the net when you perform this drill.  

Agility Latter Touch Drill

 

For this volleyball drills for agility stand parallel with agility latter. Feet wide and hips dropped like you in your defensive stand. Shuffle parallel with the latter staying as low as you can, not letting your feet get close to each other. Touch both of your hands in each space of the agility latter as you shuffle. When you reach the end of the latter change direction and continue in the other direction.

 

Moving laterally as a defender to get a dig is an important volleyball skill. Playing good defense is just as important and playing good offense. Using these volleyball drills for agility will improve you lateral agility to be able reach those kill shots to save the point and start the rally for you team.
